GIMP: White balance - correct shooting errors properly

You took a beautiful shot, but now the image is negatively affected by an unwanted color cast? Then you should use GIMP to white balance your photography to effectively fix this error. This will allow you to put your images in the right light afterwards.

How to perform a white balance

An incorrect analysis of ambient light can occur if your camera has measured color temperatures incorrectly. A subsequent white balance fixes the problem afterwards.
  1. First you need to start GIMP and open the desired photo in the image editor.
  2. See the menu bar and select the "Tools" button. In the menu that appears, now select "Colors" and then "Values".
  3. You will now be taken to a new window where you will adjust the color values for the image.
  4. Click on the "All Channels" option and use the "Automatic" button to let GIMP perform a color adjustment.
  5. In most cases, the unpleasant color cast in your photograph is now gone.

What if there is no success?

Should this process not lead to the desired success, you will have to work with the eyedroppers that you can find at the edge of the window. Use the eyedropper with the black dot and click on the darkest point in the image on the left. On the right, perform this operation with the white dot pipette. This way you have determined the lightest as well as the darkest point in the image and the color balancing is now done automatically. If you are satisfied with the result, confirm your settings.
