Saving Thunderbird email: how to do it

If you want to make sure you don't lose a particular email, you can save the message - both in EML format and as a PDF. This way it is possible to print the mail, send it or archive it on your hard drive.

EML file: Saving a Thunderbird email

When you save an email via Thunderbird, it is saved as an EML file type. You can open and view this via a mail program such as Outlook.

1. Start Thunderbird on your computer and search for the desired email.
2. Right-click the message.
3. Now select "Save as..." from the context menu.
4. Then navigate to the desired location and name the email so you can find it later.
5. Finally select "Save".

Save Thunderbird email as PDF

The EML format is not very common. Therefore, if you prefer to save your mail in PDF format, you have to take a small detour: You have to log in to your e-mail provider in the browser instead of Thunderbird.

1. Open the website of your e-mail provider in the browser and log in with your access data. Diese können Sie bei Thunderbird auslesen, wenn Sie sie vergessen haben.
2. Anschließend öffnen Sie die betreffende E-Mail.
3. Suchen Sie nach der Option, die Mail zu drucken. Dies gelingt häufig über ein Drucker-Symbol oder über ein Menü, das im Kopf der E-Mail zugänglich ist.
4. Wählen Sie neben dem Drucker dann „Ändern“.
5. Stellen Sie „Als PDF speichern“ ein, navigieren Sie zu einem Verzeichnis und benennen Sie die Datei.
6. Abschließend klicken Sie auf „Speichern“.
