GIMP: Black and white effect - your shots in the right light

With the image editing program GIMP you can easily put your shots in the right light. Especially if you want to add a unique mood to the shot, the black and white effect is a great way to do it.

How to strip your images of color

Many shots get the right angle of view by stripping them of color, giving them a unique expressiveness. Yet you can create this effective effect with GIMP with just a few clicks.
  1. First you need to open GIMP on your PC and select the desired image for editing.
  2. Select the "Colors" rubric in the menu and click on the "Desaturate" function.
  3. Three options will now open, allowing you to determine the gray value of your image. Play with the existing settings until your image has the desired effect.
  4. An advantage of this approach is that you can thus adjust the gray value and thereby also the mood to the selected subject.
  5. But you can also select the black and white mode in the menu. To do this, first select the "Image" button.
  6. Then click on the Mode option and select the "Grayscale" basis. This will immediately make your image appear in classic black and white scheme.

Refine your result

If you have some experience with GIMP, then you can still refine the effect. To do this, change the settings of the color curve as well as the settings in the "Brightness/Contrast" section. This will allow you to make the effect even more impressive.
