Windows search doesn't work: here's how to fix it

Search is one of the most handy Windows features. However, when it doesn't work properly, either no results or incomplete results are displayed. Solutions range from a simple reboot to resetting the search index.

What to do if Windows Search is broken?

It's not just Windows Search that sometimes causes problems, Cortana doesn't always run smoothly either. Restart your PC in any case first. If this does not help, restart the search:

1. Press Windows key + R and enter the following: services.msc
2. Once you press Enter, the services will open.
3. Look there for the entry "Windows Search" and double-click it. Now select the option "Quit" and then restart the service by clicking on "Start".
4. Switch the startup type to "Automatic".

Cortana error: what to do

A problem with Cortana can also affect Windows Search. Test the following:

1. Press Windows key + R and run %appdata%.
2. Navigate further and delete the following folder: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5n1h2txyewy\LocalState

Suchindex neu aufsetzen

Falls die Suche noch immer defekt ist, sollten Sie den Suchindex neu aufsetzen.

1. Öffnen Sie die Systemsteuerung.
2. Wählen Sie nun den Punkt „Indizierungsoptionen“ aus.
3. Klicken Sie anschließend auf die Option „Erweitert“. Im Bereich „Problembehandlung“ klicken Sie auf den Button „Neu erstellen“.
4. Nun wird der Suchindex zuerst gelöscht und anschließend neu erstellt. Dieser Vorgang kann einige Zeit in Anspruch nehmen.
5. Zusätzlich können Sie bei den „Indizierungsoptionen“ in der Systemsteuerung auch auf „Ändern“ klicken und eigenständig Ordner hinzufügen.
6. Wählen Sie einfach alle Ordner aus, die durchsucht werden sollen und bestätigen Sie den Vorgang mit „OK“.
