SVERWEIS Example: How to use the function

With the SVERWEIS you can search for specific information within your table. In doing so, you specify what criteria you are searching for and then you get the information you want. When using the command, the most important thing is to use the correct syntax.

Example of a SVERWEIS

The SVERWEIS command is also called "LOOKUP" in English and describes that the command is intended for looking up or searching information. This command is about looking for information by searching your table in Excel according to certain criteria.
  1. The command consists of several arguments. Here, this is called "=SVERWEIS(search_criterion; matrix; column_index; [range_reference])".
  2. SVERWEIS stands for vertical search, as this is performed from top to bottom. Alternatively, there is the "WVERWEIS", with which the search is performed from left to right.
  3. As search criterion, enter the term you are looking for within the table, for example, "coffee".
  4. In the matrix argument, on the other hand, specify the range in which you want to search for this term.
  5. As column index, specify the column in which the information you are looking for is located.
  6. The last argument [range_reference] is optional and describes whether the search should be exact or inexact in the match, where "true" stands for "inexact" and "false" for "exact".
  7. For example, a command could look like this: "=SVERWEIS("COFFEE"; A2:B5; 2; FALSE)"
