What are Flat Earthers and what do they believe in?

Flat Earthers are people who are convinced that the Earth is a disc.

• This conspiracy theory is not entirely new: For example, the "Flat Earth Society" was founded in London in 1956. Only in recent years, however, the theory could strongly gain popularity, as it was spread on the Internet.
• Within the followers, there are many different ideas and currents. A not small part makes up the religious scene, which draws its evidence from biblical quotations. Others, however, pursue a scientific approach, whose logical contradictions are ignored or reinterpreted for lack of expertise.
• Also in the exact design of the "flat model" there are hardly uniform lines. Centrally shared is alone the "knowledge" that the Earth is not spherical, but round - everything that goes beyond that, according to Flat Earthern "must still be worked out".
• This turns out to be difficult, however, because the conspirators do everything to prevent this.
• Finally, there are many ideas for the squad of the allegedly responsible: Often NASA is given as the lead, gladly in connection with a secret shadow government or even reptiloid beings who rule over humanity.
• Also anti-Semitism is quite common in the community, especially because of global finance, which is allegedly dominated by Jews and wants to disguise the true shape of the Earth. Reasons for this are not uniformly named, since there is no explanation that is not full of contradictions on this point either.

In large part, Flat Earthers are conservative or even strongly right-wing, even if the theory itself is not directly political. Nevertheless, many viewpoints correspond to right-wing thought, which is in any case strongly susceptible to conspiracy theories of all kinds.Overall, the conspiracy theory was able to gain notoriety mainly because it is so obviously contradictory and easily refutable that many people see it as a funny absurdity. In fact, it is believed to this day that it started with a harmless trolling attempt, but then gained prominence as more and more people took the idea seriously.
