Protect PDF with password: It's that easy

PDF documents can be password protected. Depending on the setting, this locks the entire document. However, only parts of the document can also be locked or certain actions can be prevented. You can find the settings in the tools under "Protect".

Encrypt a PDF with password

A PDF can be protected from unauthorized access with a password. You have various security levels and options to choose from. You can encrypt the entire document including metadata. Then it cannot be opened or edited without a password, and the file's information cannot be viewed either. It is also possible to lock only the editing of the document. Individual areas of the PDF can also be protected from editing. This is convenient when the document is to be filled out. The user can then edit only certain form fields, but otherwise cannot change the document. The document's file attachments can also be encrypted separately. Choose as password a secure code with letters, special characters and numbers and write down the password in a safe place.

Protect a PDF with password

1. Open the PDF in Acrobat Reader.
2. Select "Tools".
3. Klicken Sie auf „Schützen“ und danach auf „Verschlüsseln“.
4. Wählen Sie „Mit Kennwort verschlüsseln“.
5. Setzen Sie Haken bei allen Aktionen, die einen Kennwortschutz erfordern sollen.
6. Geben Sie das Kennwort ein.
7. Bestätigen sie mit „OK“.
