E-scooters: pedestrianization - what you need to watch out for
An e-scooter, like other vehicles, is subject to various regulations that you must comply with. The traffic regulations cannot necessarily be compared to a bicycle or a car. In addition, there is the question of whether you are allowed to drive your e-scooter in the pedestrian zone.
Are you allowed to ride your e-scooter in the pedestrian zone?
An increasing number of rental providers are making e-scooters available for rent in major German cities. This is usually done using an app that gives you access to the vehicles. The rented e-scooters usually have a general operating license. However, other points must be met in order for you to be allowed to participate in German road traffic. For example, there is a maximum speed of 20 km/h or certain routes on which you are allowed to drive with the e-scooter.- With the e-scooter, you are only allowed to drive in certain zones or on certain routes. As for other vehicles, this was also previously specified for e-scooters in a regulation.
- You are allowed to ride with the e-scooter on bike paths, in bike lanes and also on bike lanes.
- If none of these paths are available, then it is allowed to swerve onto the roadway, but only in this case.
- Riding on sidewalks and in pedestrian zones is completely prohibited.
