The social media platform TikTok is an unstoppable trend among younger users. However, the lack of control over the easily accessible content in the application has often been criticized, prompting calls for a minimum age for TikTok use.

In April 2020, it became public: TikTok users under 16 should no longer be able to receive or send direct messages. The app, which has repeatedly been classified as dangerous, is therefore becoming more active in terms of youth protection.This restriction, however, has a catch: when registering, the user can also simply enter a false age. By the way, a minimum age of 13 years has been set in the terms of use at TikTok. So anyone who is younger than that cannot officially register at all.

Control option for parents on TikTok

While it is easy to cheat while specifying the age during registration, there is nevertheless at least one option for parents to restrict the child's messaging function on TikTok.

1. Download TikTok on your phone, open the app and tap "Privacy" in the settings.
