The timing is no coincidence: After all, there is currently speculation about whether Mario Kart 9 will be released in 2021. These speculations attract the interest of millions of players.

The history of Mario Kart now stretches back almost 30 years:

• Mario Kart 64 (1996, Nintendo 64)
• Mario Kart Super Circuit (2001, Game Boy Advance)
• Mario Kart: Double Dash!!! (2003, Game Cube)
• Mario Kart DS (2005, Nintendo DS)
• Mario Kart Wii (2008, Nintendo Wii)
• Mario Kart 7 (2011, Nintendo 3DS)
• Mario Kart 8 (2014, Nintendo Wii U)
• Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (2017, Nintendo Switch)

This shows: On average, about three to four years pass between parts, so by now it would be time for the next spin-off of the series. Mario Kart 9 will be the first part to be released exclusively for the Switch, and thus should be technically stronger than Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, as the latter was a variant of the normal Mario Kart 8 optimized for the Switch.
