Partitioning an SD card - how it works

Partitioning divides an SD card into two equal or unequal partitions. Necessary is this partitioning whenever you want to use the card to swap apps. We explain the procedure to partition an SD card in our article.

This is the purpose of partitioning an SD card

By default, an SD card has only one partition, which is identified by a drive letter. However, with the help of a suitable program, you can divide your SD card into additional partitions. This is especially useful if you want to swap some apps from the internal memory to the SD card or use the SD card itself as internal memory.

How to partition your SD card

Before you start partitioning your SD card, please create a backup of the data on it. This is necessary because partitioning will delete all the data from the card.

1. To start partitioning your SD card, please start your PC or laptop and insert the card into the card slot.
2. After that, install and launch the MiniTool Partition Wizard Free Edition program.
3. Search for the SD card in the list there, right-click it and select "Split".
4. Nun können Sie durch Verschieben des Pfeils die Größe der Partitionen festlegen und diese mit „OK“ speichern.
5. Um ein Format für die zweite Partition festzulegen, machen Sie auf diese einen Rechtsklick und wählen Sie unter „Format“ > „File System“ eine Option aus.
6. Machen Sie abschließend einen erneuten Rechtsklick auf die zweite Partition, wählen Sie „Set Partition as Primary“ aus und klicken Sie auf „Apply“.
