Word: Update all fields - these methods are available

Whether you are writing a resignation or a thesis, Microsoft's Word word processing program has all the features you need. If you have used tables of contents, cross-references, or the like in your document, you can update these fields all at once.

How to update all fields in Word

When creating a Word document, you have the option to create various fields. These include, for example, a table of contents, headers and footers, bookmarks, cross-references or even formulas in created tables. All information must be updated in case of any changes to the document. Word offers you a function to update all fields simultaneously.
  1. Open the document whose fields you want to update.
  2. Then press the key combination "CTRL" + "A" on your keyboard. With this, you can select all contents at the same time.
  3. Then press the "F9" key.
  4. When using tables with fields or formulas, however, you may have to select them individually and press "F9". These are not always taken into account.
  5. To ensure that the fields are updated when printing, go to "File" in the tab bar. Here, select "Options" and then "Display". Here it is possible to set under "Printer Options" that the fields are automatically updated before printing. Activate for this the option "Update fields before printing".
