AirPods: How to control the volume

Unlike Apple's wired headphones, AirPods lack a remote control or button to adjust the volume. Learn how you can still control the volume of the wireless headphones from your iPhone, iPad or other iOS device.

How to adjust the volume of your AirPods

Once the AirPods are connected to your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, you can easily adjust the volume of the headphones using the buttons on the iOS device.
  • If you have the wireless headphones connected to your Mac, you can change the volume using the hotkeys on the keyboard or via the macOS interface, just as with the iOS devices.
  • Alternatively, adjust the volume using Siri. To do so, simply activate the voice assistant via the force sensor on the AirPods and issue the command to increase or decrease the volume. With the AirPod Pro headphones, you can even activate Siri via voice input by saying "Hey Siri".
Not only can you adjust the volume via voice input, you also have the option, for example, to stop playback or skip to the next track.

Adjust AirPod settings

To adjust the settings of the AirPods, you need your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. From there, access the Settings app and go to the Bluetooth overview. In the list of Bluetooth devices, find the AirPods and tap the info icon to access the settings. There you can, for example, adjust the name of the headphones or manage the microphone settings.
