• Cost: WhatsApp has long been free, Threema, on the other hand, is not (2.99 euros for Android / 3.49 euros for iOS).
• Network effect: The biggest advantage of WhatsApp is the number of users, which is over one billion worldwide. With Threema, there are not even ten million.
• Platforms: Both services are compatible with the main mobile systems (Android and iOS). Windows Phone is also supported. However, only WhatsApp is also available as a desktop variant for the Windows PC.
• Features: There is also a draw here. Whether VoIP, location, group chats or read receipts, Threema and WhatsApp are on the same level.
• Security: Both messengers are encrypted with end-to-end. However, only Threema allows completely anonymous communication. In addition, no data is collected, which is different with WhatsApp.

Summary: In operation, hardly any difference is visible between Threema and WhatsApp, both messengers look and feel similar. Threema is aimed at people for whom security is important and who accept for it not to find the whole circle of acquaintances in the chat list, because there are not as many users as with WhatsApp.
