Ubuntu: Change keyboard layout - how to do it

If you don't like the current keyboard layout of your Ubuntu PC anymore, you can change it via the settings. Before doing so, however, you should make sure that you are using the latest version of the Ubuntu operating system.

Change keyboard layout: Check the Ubuntu version

How to change the keyboard layout on Ubuntu depends on which Ubuntu version you are using. Since it is generally recommended to always keep the operating system up to date, you should first check whether this is the case for you and update if necessary. To do this, please open the terminal, enter the command "sudo apt.get upgrade" and confirm with the "Enter" key. First type your password and then "y" and press the "Enter" key after each entry. Now wait until the update has been installed and please restart your Ubuntu PC afterwards.

These steps are necessary to change the keyboard layout

Have you updated your Ubuntu PC or is it already using the latest version, you can change the keyboard layout with the following steps:
  1. First open the Programs menu by clicking on the "dot icon" displayed at the bottom left.
  2. Then click the "gear icon" to open the settings, navigate to "Region & Language" and click the "plus icon" under "Input Sources".
  3. Now first select a language before clicking on an available layout for the key mapping to select it and add it to the "Input Sources" area by clicking on "Add".
  4. Finally you still have to select the old layout via "V" to move it down.
