Fritzbox: Recording data traffic - is that possible?

If you use a Fritzbox, you have the option of recording the complete data traffic of the router via its user interface. The evaluation of the data recording, however, is only possible with the help of additional software. In this article, we will show you how to proceed correctly.

Fritzbox: How to record data traffic

If you want to know which data is transmitted by your router or who is using your router, you can record the data traffic. With a Fritzbox, you must proceed as follows to record the data traffic:
  1. Open a browser on your PC or laptop and call up the "fritz.box" Internet page in it.
  2. Enter your router password there, which is located on the back of the Fritzbox, to open the user interface.
  3. Here you will find the various interfaces of your network in the "Routing interface" section and can record them. Click for this next to the entry "Internet", "WLAN", "USB", "DTrace" or "Network Interfaces" on "Start" to start the recording.
  4. The download of the recording file thereby starts automatically after a moment and is stored on the PC.

So you evaluate the recorded traffic of the Fritzbox

To read out the file containing the recorded traffic, you need an additional program. For this purpose, the tool Wireshark is suitable, which you can download for free and install on your computer. Then start the program and select the read file under "File" > "Open". Now every single activity will be displayed in the upper part of the window and you will get additional information about the connection.
