Windows 10: Stereo Mix is missing - how to activate the mix

The stereo mix is a virtual recording tool of Windows 10 that allows you to record the system sound as it comes out of the speakers. If Stereomix doesn't show up in Audio Devices, you'll need to enable it in Windows Settings. E

How to enable Windows 10 stereo mix

If stereo mix is missing from your audio devices, the feature is turned off or hidden in Windows' sound settings.
  1. Open the Start menu and click the gear icon to access the settings. Alternatively, you can also use the key combination [Windows] and [i] for this.
  2. Click in the overview on the item "System".
  3. Switch via the navigation to the category "Sound".
  4. Click on the right at "Related Settings" on the option "Sound Control Panel".
  5. A new window opens, in which you switch to the tab "Recording".
  6. In the recording tab, you get a list with all recording devices. Devices that are turned off are hidden by default. Right-click in an empty area and check "Show disabled devices" to show all available devices.
  7. Right-click on the "Stereomix" entry and select the "Enable" option.
  8. Finally click "OK".
If the stereo mix does not appear even when you show the disabled devices, this may be due to the drivers. If these are outdated, it may be that the function is not supported. You can find current drivers on the manufacturer's page of your sound card or in the case of an OnBoard sound card on the mainboard manufacturer's page.
