Booting your Surface Pro 6 from a USB device is necessary when you want to make changes to firmware settings or Windows boot settings. For booting from a USB drive to work, you must first configure your Surface Pro 6 accordingly by making changes in the UEFI.

1. First shut down your Surface Pro 6 and then turn it back on while holding down the Volume Up key.
2. Hold down the Volume Up key until the Surface logo is no longer displayed and the Surface UEFI appears instead.
3. Click "Startup Configuration" in the UEFI and drag the "USB Storage" entry to the first position in the list to change the startup order.
4. Exit the UEFI by clicking "Exit" and select "Reboot Now".
