Creating a screencast - how it works

If you want to record the current content of your computer screen, this is possible with the help of a screencast. To create such a screen video, you have several options to choose from, depending on the operating system you are using. We will show you how to best proceed.

How to create a screencast using Windows on-board tools

A screencast is a recording of the current screen content. To record a screencast on your PC or laptop, you usually need an additional program. If, on the other hand, you are using Windows 10 as your operating system, it is also possible to create a screencast using on-board tools. To do this, press the key combination "Windows key" + "G" on your keyboard and click "Yes" in the window that opens. This will open a menu in which you can start the screencast by clicking on the "circle icon".

These additional tools for creating screencasts are available

If you have an operating system other than Windows 10 or if you want to edit the created screencast afterwards, the use of an additional program is necessary. Among the most popular tools for creating screencasts are, in addition to the VLC Media Player, the free programs ActivePresenter and CamStudio.
  1. If you want to use the VLC Media Player for the screencast, first open the program and click on "File" in the menu.
  2. There, select the option "Convert/Save" and switch to the tab "Open Recorder" in the window that opens.
  3. Then set the option "Desktop" as the recording mode via the drop-down menu and determine a storage location for the screencast under "Target" > "Target file".
  4. To start the recording, finally click on the "Start button", which is located at the bottom of the window.
