WhatsApp characters: What's behind it

With WhatsApp, you can send messages and files. Once you send a message, you will see a small icon in the right corner of the message, for example a clock. The icons indicate whether a message has been sent and whether the recipient has received or seen it.

This is what the different characters mean on WhatsApp

WhatsApp offers some handy features to make chatting enjoyable. These include the small characters that are displayed at the bottom right of every message. These icons tell you what the status of a message is.
  • Clock: The message has not been sent yet. If the icon persists, check your Internet connection.
  • Single checkmark: the message has been sent but has not yet arrived. The recipient has turned off his phone or has no reception.
  • Two gray ticks: The message was sent and received.
  • Two blue ticks: The message was read. This feature can be turned off by your counterpart, so you will always see only gray check marks in this chat, even if the message was read.
  • Arrow next to video or picture: Tap the arrow to forward the file.
  • Voice message with blue dot and blue microphone: This voice message was listened to. This is always displayed for memos. If the message has not been heard yet, the circle and microphone are gray.
