Set up a proxy server - use the mediator

A proxy server serves as a mediator or deputy. This is located between the Internet and the computer and thus represents an interface in communication. With the help of proxy servers you can relieve the performance, but also disguise your IP address. Before you use the server, you must first set it up.

How to set up a proxy server

If you want to disguise your IP address, the best way is to use a proxy server. Before you can set it up, you must first decide on a provider. Many Internet providers, such as Telekom, offer proxy servers.
  1. Using Windows 10, enter "Proxy" in the search box at the bottom left.
  2. Select "Change proxy settings" from the results.
  3. Next, at the bottom of the window, activate the option "Use proxy server".
  4. Now you need to enter the address of the proxy server in the text box. In addition, you need the associated port.
  5. Enable the option "Do not use proxy server for local addresses" and save the settings via the button of the same name.
  6. To test whether the proxy server works, you can check your IP address with the server enabled and disabled. If this is different, the switch works.
  7. Use a Mac, you can find the settings under "System Preferences" > "Network" > "Active Internet Connection" (> "More options".
  8. Here you can now make all the necessary settings under "Proxies".
