Debian: Add User - how to add a new user

Debian is a free operating system that, like Windows, provides a variety of applications and program packages. The advantage is that you get it completely free of charge. If you want to add a new user on your Debian PC, use the command "adduser". This can be done with a few clicks.

How to add a user in Debian?

It can be useful to create multiple users in Debian, for example if several people use one PC. This way you have the possibility to customize your user account completely and you don't have to worry about data security. In Debian, you create a new user account as follows:
  1. Open the console via the program PuTTY, which you can download for free.
  2. Log in as administrator, called "root" in Debian.
  3. Enter "adduser" and then the name of the new user. Confirm the entry.
  4. Now set a password. This you repeat a second time and confirm again with the Enter key.
  5. In the next step, you are free to enter information such as the name or phone number of the user. You can skip this step by confirming without entering any information before.
  6. Finally, check if all the information is correct and confirm with the "Y" key.

How to switch users?

Now that you have created a second user, you can always log out of one account and log in to another. This works by typing "su - username" in the console, specifying the appropriate username. Then confirm with the appropriate password.
