Can you turn Alexa off too? How it works

With an Amazon Echo, you automatically get the Alexa voice assistant with it. You can use voice commands to control paired devices or applications at any time. However, the smart speakers do not have a power switch. Nevertheless, you have other options to turn off the device in one way or another.

How to turn Alexa off

The various Amazon Echos don't have a power switch that lets you turn the device off just like that. To still prevent the voice assistant from listening, you have other options to choose from.
  1. You can put your Echo into a low-power state. To do this, all you have to do is hold down the action button and then press the microphone button twice. In this case, the Echo can still listen to your conversations, but it will consume less energy.
  2. To stop the voice assistant from listening to your conversations, turn off the microphone. To do this, you need to press the button on the device marked with a crossed-out microphone. As soon as the device lights up red, the microphone is disabled. Press the button again to reactivate the microphone.
  3. If this is also too little for you, the only option left is to unplug the device. To do this, you need to disconnect the Amazon Echo from the power outlet so that it can no longer be powered. It is helpful to use a power strip with switch, because you have so a kind of "power button" available.
