Using WhatsApp with a different number

If you want to use WhatsApp, you must have a phone number. If you switch to a new phone number, you can do it directly in the settings found in the WhatsApp application.

Same smartphone, different number for WhatsApp

If you already use WhatsApp but have a new number, you can easily use your old account with the new number.

1. First insert the new SIM card into your smartphone. You may need to activate it first before you can be reached on the new number.
2. Then click in WhatsApp top right on the three dots and then on "Settings".
3. Switch to "Account" and on "Change number". Now enter your old number in the upper text field. In the lower text field comes your new number. Now you will receive a code via SMS. Once you have entered this, you can use the new number in WhatsApp.

New smartphone, new number

In the case of a new number on a new smartphone, there are some things to consider. The easiest way to make the switch is if you still have your old phone.

1. If you have both your old and your new smartphone at hand, switch to the old phone first. Change the phone number here as described above and only then set up WhatsApp on the new device.
2. If you do not have your old phone, you need to reinstall WhatsApp. Then enter the new number and confirm it. You can only restore your old account data if you have created a WhatsApp backup.
