Drones: Rules - what to watch out for

Even if you only use your drone for hobby purposes, there are some rules to follow. These were updated in 2017 in a new regulation and govern what is allowed. Get an overview of the most important rules and what exceptions there are here.

These are the most important rules for drone users

Even though there is no drone law in Germany, there are still some rules you need to follow when flying a drone. For example, you are allowed to fly at a maximum altitude of 100 meters and must always have your drone in sight.
  1. In addition, you need either a liability insurance that covers the use of drones or a special drone insurance.
  2. While registration is not required, there is a marking requirement with a fireproof sticker that includes your name and full address.
  3. Depending on how heavy your drone is, you may fly it from 2 kilograms takeoff weight only with a license or from 5 kilograms only with an exemption permit.
  4. In addition, flying at night and flying over private property and nature reserves are prohibited. If there is an airport nearby, flying a drone within 1.5 kilometers is prohibited.

Drones: These exceptions apply to some rules

There are exceptions to some of the previously described rules that apply under specific conditions. For example, you are allowed to exceed the maximum flight altitude of 100 meters if you are on a model airfield, and you are also allowed to fly a drone under 250 grams without visual contact if you use FPV goggles. An exception to the ban on flying over private residential properties also applies if you have the permission of the owner or the drone is lighter than 250 grams and does not have a camera.
