GIMP: Pixelate - use the pixels correctly

With the right tool, you can not only pixelate individual image sections in GIMP, but also make entire shots unrecognizable. In this way, you can hide certain parts, for example. You can find out how to easily find the helpful function here.

How to use the feature

Pixelling parts of an image can be helpful for various reasons. It is really simple to use the function.
  1. Start GIMP and open the image you want to pixelate. If you only want to make a specific part unrecognizable, you have to determine this section beforehand.
  2. Use a right-click so that the context menu opens and hover your mouse over the "Filter" entry.
  3. You will now see another menu where you select the "Blur" sub-item.
  4. You will now be shown various options that fall into this category. Select the item "Pixelate".
  5. Now you need to use the up arrow to change the value for the pixels. Increase the value until you notice the desired effect in the preview.
  6. Once you are satisfied with the result of the filter, you must confirm the processing with "OK".

Pixelate may also be necessary

It may be that you need to pixelate certain aspects in an image, such as license plates, to be allowed to publish them. There are many other areas where you can legally protect yourself by pixelating someone else's data or face. You can do this specifically with GIMP.
