Nvidia: GeForce RTX 3080 vs. 2080 Ti - how big is the upgrade?

The announcement of Nvidia's GeForce 3000 series caused quite a stir, as the new generation hinted at a huge jump performance-wise. But how fast is the RTX 3080 really compared to the 2080 Ti?

New favorite? The GeForce RTX 3080 is currently particularly in the focus of practical tests.

The GeForce 2080 Ti was considered the flagship of its generation - and that was also reflected in the price. The fact that the RTX 3080 will be significantly cheaper now consequently adds to the excitement.

GeForce RTX 3080: Cheaper and faster than the 2080 Ti

Here are the most important specs in a direct comparison:
  • The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti appeared with a price of around 1,200 Euros. The RTX 3080 will cost 699 euros in the Founder's Edition; custom designs are usually a bit more expensive.
  • In terms of VRAM, the RTX 3080 is slightly lighter equipped with 10 GB than the 2080 Ti (11 GB). However, the new card uses GDDR6X memory. Overall, it has a memory bandwidth of 760 GB per second, which is significantly more than the 616 GB per second of the 2080 Ti.
  • In return, the RTX 3080 requires more power: The TDP is specified at 320 watts. For the 2080 Ti, it is 260 watts.
  • The number of shaders has been exactly doubled (8,704 compared to 4,352).
This is also reflected in the performance. According to first practical tests, the RTX 3080 is clearly ahead of the 2080 Ti. The higher the resolution, the bigger the gap. In 4K, the FPS advantage is around 30 percent, in 1440p it is 20 to 25 percent, but in 1080p it is less than 10 percent. This means for prospective buyers: The RTX 3080 is a clear upgrade in any case, but you should pay attention to the power consumption of your system. Furthermore, the purchase is only worthwhile if you play at least in 1440p, which is, however, becoming more and more the rule.
