What are AAE files? We explain

AEE files are generated whenever you edit your images on a device running iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite. We'll show you why AEE files are stored in addition to the photo file, and what you can do if you find them on your Mac or Windows PC.

This is what AAE files do

If you find files ending with ".aee" on your computer, tablet or smartphone, they are files that have been saved in addition to jpg photo files. They are created only on Apple devices running iOS 8 or OS X Yosemite and contain all the changes you have made to the photo files. Useful are aae files especially if you want to change or undo certain changes that you have made with Apple Aperture or in the photo app again.

This helps with occurring problems with AAE files

If you have edited photos on your Mac or iPhone and then transfer them to a Windows PC, it can come to problems with the aae files, because they can not be opened under Windows.
  1. To transfer photo files correctly, it is therefore recommended not to transfer them directly from an Apple device to the Windows computer, but instead to use Google Drive.
  2. For this, first upload the files from your Mac, iPhone or iPad to Google Drive and then get them via this to your PC.
  3. Even when transferring photos from the iPhone to the Mac, it can happen that the edited version of the images is not imported automatically. Here it helps to send the photos via AirDrop or email to the Mac or to access them via the iCloud photo library.
