Microsoft Excel: How to label a chart - all info

Visualized data series are useful, but only if they are sufficiently labeled. If you work with Excel charts, our guide shows you how to go about labeling them.

Always appropriate: chart labeling is possible for different elements.

Excel charts give you many options. For example, it is even possible to create a chart with two Y-axes. Labeling is one of the simpler tasks.

Excel: These options are available for chart labeling

You can insert labels using the following steps:
  1. Click on the chart to select it.
  2. The "Chart Tools" will now open at the top of the Excel menu. Select the "Design" section if it is not already active.
  3. On the far left of the ribbon (in the "Chart layouts" section), click "Add chart element".
  4. Now you have several options available. With "Axis Title" you can label the axes, either both or individually. With "Diagram title" you give the whole diagram a heading.
Afterwards you can position all kinds of labels freely by simply moving them. By the way, this also includes the legend, which you can also find under "Add diagram element". Generell raten wir dazu, sich einmal durch alle Optionen zu klicken, um zu sehen, welche Möglichkeiten es gibt und ob diese Ihrem Diagramm einen Mehrwert liefern.
