Removing your Windows 10 password: How to do it

If you want to boot up your PC without having to enter a password, you can't completely remove the password should your account with Microsoft be linked to your version of Windows. However, you can bypass the password prompt or set yourself a short PIN.

When you boot up Windows 10, most users will be asked for a password. This is either directly related to your Microsoft account, or can be useful if you have multiple users working on the same computer and don't want to share your personal information. For security reasons, passwords that are linked to the Microsoft account cannot be easily removed. If your password is too long for you, you can set up a PIN in the Windows 10 settings. The number combination is then shorter and quicker to enter than the password. To do this, left-click on the Windows icon in the settings, click on "Accounts" and open the "Logon options" tab. Under "Windows Hello PIN" you can choose a combination of numbers yourself, which you then have to enter when you start your computer.

Enable Windows automatic logon

If you don't want to type in your password or PIN when you start Windows 10, you can enable automatic logon:
  1. Press the Windows key+R keys simultaneously, type "netplwiz" and press Enter.

Step 1: Simultaneously press Windows key + R and type "netplwiz".

  2. Now uncheck "Users must provide username and password" at the top and click "OK".

Step 2: Uncheck "Users must provide username and password" and click "OK".

  3. You must now enter the password again to allow the setting.
  4. If there are multiple users on the PC, you now only need to right-click to select the appropriate user.
