What does ip68 certification mean? What to look out for

If you frequently use your phone or other device in situations where it can be damaged, it pays to look out for certifications. The ip68 certification, for example, indicates how resistant a smartphone's case is to foreign objects and water.

What does ip68 certification mean

There is a special certification so that when you buy a device, you already know how much water and dust it can withstand. This indicates how much liquid and foreign bodies a device can tolerate before it gets damaged. You will often discover the "IP" certification on smartphones in particular. The marking consists of different sections.
  1. The "IP" stands for the fact that this certification indicates how strongly the device is protected against the penetration of liquids and co. In detail, this is called "Ingress Protection" or also "protection against ingress".
  2. In order for a device to receive this certification, it is tested by the International Electronic Commission. Two digits are then assigned to indicate the degree of protection.
  3. The first digit indicates the degree of protection against foreign bodies such as dust. In this case, the first digit is a 6. This is the highest number to be achieved in this point and means that the smartphone is fully protected against touch and dust.
  4. The second number is the degree of protection against liquids. The scale here goes from 0 to 9. In this case, the second digit is an 8. This means that the device can withstand continuous substitution and is protected.
