Steam: Change name - how to do it right

If you use the online platform Steam to buy and play videogames, you have to enter a name for your account during registration. Whether it is subsequently possible to change this name, we explain here.

Steam: In these cases, a name change is possible

Whether you can change your name on the Steam gaming platform depends on whether this is your account name or your profile name. While the account name is needed to log in to the Steam website, the profile name is the name under which you appear in games and friend lists. Since the account name is already set during registration, it is not possible to change it later. You can change your profile name as often as you like.

How to change your profile name in the Steam client

If you no longer like your profile name, you have the option of changing it via the Steam desktop client.

1. To do this, first open the Steam app and click on your current name in the top right corner to open the menu.
2. Navigieren Sie im Menü anschließend zu „Mein Profil anzeigen“ > „Profil bearbeiten“ und tippen Sie in das Feld „Profilname“ den Namen ein, den Sie nutzen möchten.
3. Damit die Änderung wirksam wird, scrollen Sie auf der Seite bitte nach ganz unten und klicken Sie auf „Änderungen speichern“.
