FaceTime: Screen sharing - how it works

FaceTime offers iPad and iPhone users the free opportunity to make video calls with friends or family. If you also want to share the current content of your screen with your contacts, however, this is only possible via a detour.

How to share your screen via FaceTime

If you use FaceTime on your Apple device to video chat with your friends or relatives, you also have the option to share the current screen content. However, this is not directly in FaceTime, but only under additional use of iMessage.
  1. Start iMessage for this first on your computer and open the chat of the respective contact with whom you want to share your screen.
  2. Click in the chat first on "Details" and then on the sign with the three blue rectangles.
  3. Now select either the entry "Invitation to access my screen" or the entry "Ask for screen sharing" to complete the screen sharing setup.

Alternative to FaceTime: How does screen sharing via Skype

If you want to share your screen via video telephony with a contact who has neither FaceTime nor iMessage, there are alternative programs. Free on the computer and smartphone, this is possible with Skype. To do this, first start a phone call with your contact and then click on the "plus symbol" or the "three-dot symbol" to select "screen transfer" from the menu. If you use Skype on the PC, you also have the option of deciding whether you want to share the entire screen or just a window.
