iCloud Backup: How it works

It's always annoying: for some reason you want to restore your iPhone or iPad from a backup, but it's been weeks, if not months, since the last backup. That's why it's handy to simply have backups automatically uploaded to iCloud.

How to enable automatic backups via iCloud

Apple's iCloud cloud service allows Apple users to back up their iPhone, iPad or iPod touch wirelessly. This way, the backups always stay up to date. In addition, a computer is no longer needed, but only an Internet connection.
  1. Open the settings on their iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch and navigate in them to "[your name]" > "iCloud".
  2. Scroll down to the bottom and click on "iCloud backup" to enable the function.
  3. Now still connect your iPhone to a power source and make sure that the device is connected to the WLAN.
  4. A backup of your data is now automatically created regularly.

When the cloud is full

Every Apple user has a certain amount of free storage available in the iCloud. However, if the cloud is to be used for regular backups, this can be used up quickly. You can add up to 1 TB of storage for a monthly fee if you want to continue using iCloud.
