PlayStation 5: Power consumption info - with comparison

The PlayStation 5 is significantly more powerful than its predecessor and that leads to a correspondingly higher power consumption. Read how much the PS5 consumes and how it compares.

More power - in every respect: with the PlayStation 5, power consumption also increases.

The PlayStation 5's technical specifications are impressive. But what does that mean for the power socket?

This is the power consumption of the PlayStation 5

On the power consumption of the PlayStation 5, here are some interesting figures:
  • On average, the PlayStation 5 consumes between 160 and 200 watts when gaming. Similar values apply to the Xbox Series X.
  • In the peak, the consumption can be around 225 watts - so the Sony console consumes slightly more than the Microsoft competition. Even higher values are possible in the future, if a title puts a lot of strain on the hardware.
  • For the power costs, this means roughly calculated: Two hours of gameplay per day result in around 45 euros per year.
  • For comparison, a look at the consumption of older consoles, here using the Xbox One as an example: This consumes around 125 watts when playing, so significantly less.
The higher consumption of the PS5 thus corresponds to the leap in performance that the next-gen console claims for itself.
