You are probably already familiar with the abbreviation RAM from main memory. VRAM goes in the same direction.

What is VRAM? Simple explanation and tips

VRAM is the abbreviation for video RAM. Thus, it is the memory of the graphics card and the capacity is specified analogously to the main memory. This shows how potent today's graphics cards are in the meantime:

• Whoever buys a new gaming graphics card today usually reaches for a model with at least 6 GB VRAM.
• Many models that are currently installed in computers of hobby gamers have about 8 GB VRAM.
• High-end graphics cards even have up to 24 GB VRAM.
• The VRAM is installed directly as memory on the graphics card. It cannot be expanded or removed, but is a permanently integrated component of the graphics card.

This also explains why graphics cards are the most important component for gaming PCs. The VRAM load always depends on the title, but graphics cards with 4 GB often reach their limits. GTA V is a good example: Hier werden 3,5 bis 4 GB belegt – und das Spiel erschien bereits 2013. Kommende Spiele werden dementsprechend noch hungriger sein.
