WLAN without a connection - these are your options

If there is no DSL connection available at your place of residence to access the Internet via WLAN or if you do not want to use it, there are several alternatives. Here we show you how to surf the Internet without a connection via the mobile network or a WLAN hotspot.

How to get WLAN without an Internet connection

Normally, you need a connection and a WLAN-enabled router to surf the Internet. However, if you do not have an Internet connection, it is also possible to surf the Internet wirelessly using alternative methods. For example, instead of using a DSL connection, you can also surf the Internet via the mobile network. This is possible anywhere there is cell phone reception and at least one HSDPA or LTE signal is available. All you need for this is a suitable mobile phone tariff, a mobile WLAN router and a SIM card that you insert into the router.

Without a connection: using a WLAN hotspot

If you only want to surf the Internet from time to time, setting up a cell phone hotspot is also an alternative to surfing without an Internet connection. Since most smartphones now have a hotspot function, you can share their Internet data via WLAN and thus also have Internet access with your PC or laptop. Before you can use the hotspot, however, it is first necessary to activate and set up the function on the smartphone.

1. To do this, please open the Settings app of your smartphone and go to "Tethering" or "Mobile Hotspot".
2. Tap there on the entry "WLAN hotspot setup" and set both a name and a password for your hotspot.
3. If the hotspot is activated, select it on your computer or tablet, enter the associated password and click "Connect".
