Set up a network in Windows 10 - this is how it is possible

If you use several devices within a household, a home network can be useful. This makes it possible to exchange files or folders between devices. You cannot create a home network via Windows 10, but you can set up a private network via workgroups.

How to set up a network in Windows 10

In Windows 10, the home network feature has been completely removed. If you now want to set up a network, then this is possible via workgroups. You need to perform the following steps on each device that you want to connect to the network.
  1. Press the "Windows" key + "I" key combination to open the Windows settings. Then click "Network and Internet".
  2. Switch to "Status" on the left side and click the "Change Adapter Options" button under "Change Network Settings".
  3. Select your network connection in the list with a double click.
  4. Click on "Properties" and activate the option "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" and confirm the selection via "Ok".
  5. Now open the Control Panel and select "System and Security" and then "System".
  6. Click "Change settings" under "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings" on the right. In the new window, click "Change" under "Computer Name" at the bottom and enter a name for the workgroup. Note that all computers must have the same name.
  7. On all devices, you must also be logged in with your Microsoft account.
  8. Reopen "Network and Sharing Center" > "Change advanced sharing settings" > "Turn on network discovery" > "Save changes".
