Gimp: How to create an animated GIF

Gimp is an open source image editor, which with its range of functions is a suitable alternative to paid software. The program is available for all major operating systems and can be used for various purposes. You can also create an animated GIF with the software.

Create an animated GIF with Gimp

Gimp provides numerous functions to create animations or edit images. You can also create an animated GIF with the software.
  1. First you need several layers in Gimp, which represent the individual frames of your animation.
  2. To do this, first create your background for the animation.
  3. Then open a new layer and set the "Fill Type" to "Transparent". Only in this way can the previously created background also be seen.
  4. Now create as many layers as you need for your GIF. Name the individual layers so that you know exactly which should be displayed and for how long. The order of the frames is already determined by the layer order.
  5. Alternatively, you can find under "Filter" > "Animation" various ready-made animations that you can use to create your GIF.
  6. After that, go to "File" and then "Export...".
  7. Now give your animation a name and make sure that it ends with .gif endet, da Gimp so weiß, dass es sich hierbei um ein GIF handelt.
  8. Anschließend klicken Sie auf „Exportieren“ > „Bild als GIF exportieren“ und aktivieren die Option „Als Animation“.
  9. Haben Sie alle Änderungen vorgenommen, bestätigen Sie mit „Exportieren“.
