Kindle Unlimited, the reading flat rate from Amazon, is now enjoying great popularity. However, authors should know a few things about this.

KDP Select: Kindle Unlimited always included in the package

When authors activate their eBook with KDP Select, this means an exclusive commitment to Amazon for at least 90 days. Consequently, the work may not be published on any other market, not even on private blogs.

• Through KDP Select, however, the eBook is automatically included in Kindle Unlimited. This is a strong argument according to testimonials. Without KDP Select, participation in the flat rate program is not possible.
• The two services are thus inextricably linked. The advantage of Kindle Unlimited is especially for new, unknown authors that they can more easily find a readership.
• The disadvantage, on the other hand, is that the eBook is available exclusively from Amazon.

How heavy this disadvantage weighs is difficult to judge. The fact is also that Amazon is by far the most important eBook retailer. In many cases, authors therefore report a positive balance despite exclusive binding. Another plus point of KDP Select, by the way, is the possibility to promote the books for free or with a discount - this can also be a powerful tool especially for newcomers.On the other hand, for those who prefer to offer their books on the free market, completely without exclusive binding, KDP Select and thus also Kindle Unlimited are not an option.
