Selling your Mac - what you need to consider before selling

Before you put your Mac up for sale, you should prepare the device accordingly. This includes backing up your data and restoring it to factory settings, among other things. Learn how to properly prepare and sell your Mac here.

How to prepare your Mac for sale

First, create a backup of your data so that it is not lost. If you are switching to a new Mac, Apple offers a migration wizard. The assistant helps you to transfer the data from the old device to the new one.
  • If you are using macOS Mojave or an older OS version, you need to log out of iTunes. To do this, call up iTunes and click on "Account" in the navigation and then on "Authorization". There, select the "Deauthorize this computer" option. Log in with your Apple ID and finally click "Deauthorize".
  • Also log out of iCloud via System Preferences to avoid that data continues to be synchronized.
  • If you have used the iMessage service on your Mac, you must also log out there. To do this, simply open the Messages app and call up the settings. There you will find the corresponding option in the category "iMessage".
  • Reset the NVRAM or PRAM.
  • Finally delete the hard drive and reset the Mac to factory settings.
Once you have done everything, you can advertise the Mac on eBay or eBay Classifieds, for example. Alternatively, you can also sell the device on one of the various resale platforms such as reBuy or mResell.
