Router: 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz - which WLAN is better?

You need a router to establish a connection between your home network and the Internet. In most cases, you can borrow a router from your ISP during the contract period. But you also have the option of buying one of the many models yourself.

What is the difference between a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz router?

There are routers that work with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Before choosing a model, you should first consider which standard you need for your purpose.
  1. First, think about the range. In most cases, the range of the 5 GHz WLAN is less than that of the 2.4 GHz WLAN. If necessary, however, you can also help with a repeater.
  2. To be able to receive 5 GHz, your devices must also support the appropriate standards. This includes 802.11n or even 802.11ac.
  3. Since the 5 GHz frequency is used less, you can expect less interference when using it than is the case with 2.4 GHz. This is especially useful if there are several households in your area that use this frequency for the WLAN.
5 GHz is therefore only worthwhile if your current WLAN is too unstable, too slow for you or prone to interference. If you have no problems at all, you can also use 2.4 GHz.
