Buy a WLAN router - find the right device
If you would like to buy a new WLAN router, there are a few things you should consider when making your purchase. Check that your new router works with the WLAN standard - this will guarantee high transmission speeds.
If you want to have a fast WLAN connection, you should make sure when buying the new router that it uses the latest WLAN standard.- Older routers use the 802.11g standard, so the data transfer speed is limited to 54 megabits per second (Mbps).
- More recent devices use the newer 802.11n standard, with which a speed of 900 Mbit/s is theoretically possible.
- The latest standard is WLAN 6 (802.11 ax), through which transmission speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbit/s) are achievable - at least under laboratory conditions.
This is what you should look for when buying a WLAN router
In addition to the WLAN speed, you should also consider some other values:- Think about which ports you need, for example, to integrate a network drive or a printer into the network.
- Single-, dual- or tri-band? Single-band is often inexpensive, but offers only very low performance and uses only the 2.4 gigahertz frequency for the WLAN network. Dual-band is the standard today. A 2.4 and a 5 GHz band are used for higher transmission speeds. Tri-band routers offer the strongest connection with two 5 GHz bands and a 2.4 band.
- If you want to use vectoring, the router you buy must logically have this technology integrated.
