Formatting Headings: Word - the options

To format parts of text as headings in Word, you can choose between several already existing styles in the menu bar. However, you can still customize these as needed to format headings in Word.

Word: How to format text as a heading

Properly formatting the headings in a Word document is especially important if you want to create a table of contents. Once you insert a table of contents, Word automatically enters all headings into it. However, this only works if the headings have been formatted accordingly beforehand.
  1. To format a text as a heading, first select it using the mouse.
  2. Then go to the "Start" tab and select "Heading 1" from the list of style sheets. Format all other headings in the same way.
  3. If you want some headings to appear in a different format, select another style, for example, Heading 2.

Formatting: Create a style sheet for headings yourself in Word

If you do not like the existing style sheets for headings or if they do not meet the specifications to be fulfilled, you can create your own templates. Here you have the choice of creating a completely new template or customize a style sheet.
  1. To create a new template, please click under style sheets on the small arrow down directly to the right of the field with the ready-made style sheets, and then on "Create style sheet". Give this a name.
  2. Then click on "Change" to adjust font, font size, paragraph and more.
  3. Change an existing template is possible by right-clicking on the style sheet and selecting the "Change" option. Once you have customized the template according to your wishes, check "Update automatically" and tap "OK".
