F1 2019: How DRS works and why it's so important
The principle of DRS has only existed since 2011, making it one of the newer innovations in Formula 1. F1 2019 also features DRS, and our guide explains what it's all about.
DRS is supposed to make for more exciting races. Yet the principle behind it is actually quite simple.F1 2019: That's why you should always use DRS
DRS stands for "Drag Reduction System." Simply explained: the drag of a car is significantly reduced.- This happens at the rear wing, which is hydraulically flattened.
- This gives the car less downforce, which leads to higher speeds.
- However, the use is subject to strict rules: DRS is only allowed in approved zones and only when a driver is less than one second behind the car in front.
- In the first laps of a race, DRS is not yet enabled. In case of rain, there is no release at all for safety reasons.
- In F1 2019, you can (and should) always use DRS when possible. In chases, the drag can be crucial on long straights to pass the car in front.
- Inversely, if you are being chased, remember that your rear can and will activate DRS to overtake you. This allows early countermeasures (keyword: battle line).
- In practice and qualifying, you may always use DRS in the designated zones, even if you are alone on the track. The 1-second rule only applies in the race.
