Determining Windows 10 disk space - how to do it

The disk space of your Windows 10 computer results from how much capacity the installed hard disks have. You can see the information you want at any time in Windows Explorer. Here you can see how much memory a hard drive has and how many gigabytes of it are still available.

Find out the disk space in Windows 10

You can easily display the disk space of your hard drive in Windows Explorer. There you can see the total and available space of your hard drives. Don't be surprised if your hard drive shows less space than specified by the manufacturer. This is a common inaccuracy in the capacity specification. A 1,000 gigabyte hard drive actually has only 931 gigabytes of available space. This is because hardware manufacturers use the decimal system for calculations, but computers work with the binary system. Therefore, for every gigabyte of a hard drive, 24 megabytes are missing. So if your hard disk has less space than specified, it is not a defect. However, if several hundred gigabytes are missing, there may be a technical problem. In this case, you can use a diagnostic program to find and fix the error.

Show the disk space

  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. Click on "This PC" on the right in the folder structure.
  3. Under "Devices and drives", your hard drives are displayed.
  4. Under your hard drive, you will see the total hard drive space and the available space.
  5. If you have multiple hard drives, add up the available space of all the hard drives to determine your computer's storage space.
