Call of Duty: What is SBMM? We explain

The players in Call of Duty's multiplayer battles are assembled via SBMM. The system behind it has long been used not only in CoD, but is discussed there particularly often.

Statistics as a basis: SBMM ensures a balanced team composition.

Reaction time, aiming precision, movement, tactical behavior: In shooters like Call of Duty, skill has many facets and that's exactly what SBMM focuses on.

Call of Duty: SBMM is supposed to ensure balanced matches

SBMM stands for "skill-based matchmaking". This refers to the composition of lobbies and teams based on the expected skills of the players.
  • In this way, players with as similar a skill level as possible should meet.
  • More than that, the teams in a lobby are put together via SBMM. Large skill differences between the players are compensated by the fact that both teams compete approximately with a comparable overall strength.
  • For the calculation of the respective player skill serve various metrics. Not alone the K/D ratio is relevant, because it is also about values such as the shot precision.
  • In Call of Duty is particularly often discussed about the implementation of the SBMM, because many players are not satisfied with it. However, the principle itself is used in many titles, for example, also in Fortnite or Valorant.
Thanks to SBMM, even beginners can always find games in which they are not completely without a chance. At the same time, top players are allowed to compete with opponents at their level. Despite the criticism of some points in the implementation, it is therefore clear that SBMM is also indispensable in the future.
