Determine insects: App - how to recognize the bug

If you like to be outdoors and are interested in insects, there are certainly some species you find and don't know exactly what they belong to. Meanwhile, thanks to smartphones, there are some apps that can do the job for you. Just with a photo you can determine the insects.

What insect apps are there?

At the moment, there are three insect apps that stand out.

1. With the NABU insect world app, you can recognize and identify most native insect species by photo. 122 insect species are supported. You can also shoot and submit insect photos to support research in this area. But the app has a very large memory footprint and can only recognize a few species.
2. With the Map of Live, you can see which species are native to the area you are in. Not only insects are shown, but also mammals, birds and reptiles. You have to pick out the species yourself, as there is no automatic detection. However, the app has a very large content of species for this.
3. With the app "Insects and Butterflies" you can determine various creepy-crawlies. The app offers 100 of the native species with HD images and explanations. Also, the app uses a built-in recognition feature that lets you identify most insects by photo.
