Phoenix Point: Epic Games under fire again? All info

Epic Games is pushing powerfully into the market with its own launcher and wants to take market share from Steam. The latest cause for debate is now Phoenix Point and we explain what it's all about.

Epic Games' exclusive deals don't exactly make the company more popular.

Phoenix Point comes from the makers of the XCOM series and is based on the same principle. Accordingly, the expectations are high - and Epic Games may again listen to criticism.

Phoenix Point: Epic Games again with exclusive deal

The release of Phoenix Point is planned for December 2019. But there is a big but:
  • Epic Games has agreed with developer Snapshot Games on a time-exclusive deal.
  • This means that Phoenix Point will initially only appear for the Epic Games Launcher.
  • The duration of the exclusive deal is one year. Other platforms such as Steam may thus not offer the game until December 2020, if there are no further postponements.
  • It is particularly piquant that Phoenix Point was partially funded via crowdfunding and there was no talk of an Epic Games deal at the time.
  • In order to appease angry backers, Snapshot Games is now even offering refunds.
For fans of turn-based tactics, this means having to opt for the Epic Games Launcher or wait a whole year. The hotly debated topic surrounding Epic Games' strategy will certainly not lose its temperature as a result.
