KDP: How Amazon calculates eBook page count

The page count is important for many readers, even for eBooks, but it is more difficult because settings such as font size can be freely adjusted. We explain how Amazon calculates the number of pages.

Numbers are relative: the actual number of pages for eBooks is not fixed.

eBooks, like their physical relatives, come in a wide variety of lengths. However, the number of pages is subject to a technical peculiarity.

Amazon: eBook page number calculated according to standard format

The number of pages for Kindle eBooks is rather to be understood as a rough estimate:
  • According to Amazon, the calculation of the number of pages is based on the approximate standard format for paperbacks.
  • Readers thus get a good estimate of the length of the eBook quite independently of their own settings.
  • These can ultimately vary greatly: First and foremost, the font size makes a significant difference for how much content can be displayed on a page.
  • Neverthe indicated page number remains to be enjoyed with caution: Occasionally, books of similar length will give very different figures.
While reading, that's why the percentage is the best option to see how far you've come in the eBook.
